Description
Photograph. M27 - The Dumbell (Planetary) Nebula. Lying in our Milky Way Galaxy, M27 was discovered by Charles Messier in 1764. It was the first planetary nebula discovered. The distance to the nebula is about 1200 light-years away.
The colors of the nebula are produced by a tenuous gas. The gas in turn is heated and excited by the ultraviolet light from the central (core) star.
The nebula derives its name from its dumbbell shape.
